Vintage Japanese Bamboo Hanakago Ikebana Flower Vessel, Attributed to Hideaki Honma, Late Showa 1966-1989 | SKU: 26M-796
A sculptural bamboo hanakago of exceptional elegance -- thin-shaved bamboo strips bent into a graceful open form, with a maker’s mark on the underside believed to correspond to the bamboo artist Hideaki Honma.
A hanakago is a traditional Japanese flower basket or vessel used in ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement. This refined example is formed from thin, carefully shaved bamboo strips, each steamed and bent into a sweeping architectural curve. The individual panels are joined with braided bamboo cord lashing, creating a dynamic open structure that feels both delicate and sculptural. The warm amber-red surface has a rich lacquered or heat-treated finish, enhancing the natural bamboo grain and giving the vessel a deep, glowing presence.
The underside bears a mark believed to be associated with Hideaki Honma, a recognized Japanese bamboo craft artist. While we cannot guarantee the attribution without accompanying documentation, the quality of construction, refined proportions, and expressive use of bent bamboo strongly suggest the hand of a highly skilled maker. A removable black inner cylinder is included, allowing the piece to function as a practical ikebana vessel while protecting the outer bamboo structure from water.
In a modern home, this bamboo hanakago makes a striking accent for an entryway, console table, shelf, or living room display. It is especially well suited for a single branch, seasonal ikebana arrangement, dried grasses, or minimalist botanical display. Its warm terracotta tone, organic curves, and open sculptural form complement Japandi, wabi-sabi, and mid-century modern interiors beautifully. Even without flowers, it stands as a collectible work of Japanese bamboo craft.
