Japanese Ikebana Hanakago Flower Basket | Vintage Living Room Accent & Decorative Planter, 1966-1989 (Late Showa), SKU 26M-521-1

A sculptural bamboo hanakago with bold open weave -- handcrafted for ikebana flower arranging and wabi-sabi living room decor.

A hanakago is a traditional Japanese woven flower basket used as a vessel in ikebana, the ancient Japanese art of flower arranging. This striking Late Showa-era example is hand-woven from split bamboo in a domed, lantern-like form that widens at the midsection before tapering to a flat square base -- a silhouette that is at once rustic and architecturally refined. The body features two distinct weave patterns working in dialogue: a tightly woven lattice base provides structural grounding, while bold diagonal and arching strips sweep upward across the open upper body in a dynamic, rhythmic pattern. The handle -- twisted from slender bamboo rods and knotted at intervals -- rises in a graceful arc and is secured to the basket shoulders with wrapped bindings, a detail that speaks to the skill of the craftsman. The warm honey-and-amber tones of the bamboo have deepened with age, lending the piece the unmistakable patina of a genuine vintage Japanese craft object.

Today this hanakago is every bit as compelling outside the tokonoma alcove as within it. Set it on a entryway console, a living room shelf, or a bedroom side table as a standalone sculptural accent in the wabi-sabi aesthetic -- the open weave casts beautiful shadows in natural light. Tuck a small vase or bud vase inside to display fresh or dried stems in the ikebana tradition, or use it as a decorative storage basket for rolled linens, dried botanicals, or small potted plants in a Japandi-style interior. It also makes a truly unique housewarming gift for anyone drawn to handcrafted Japanese antiques and natural material decor.

A handcrafted piece of Japanese antique basketry that brings organic texture, quiet artistry, and wabi-sabi warmth to any modern home.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
