Antique Japanese Bronze Tsuridoro Hanging Lantern, Taisho 1912-1926 | SKU: 26J-0758-1

A handcrafted bronze hanging lantern with pagoda roof, frosted glass panels, and rich verdigris patina -- a rare survivor of Taisho-era Japanese metalwork.

A tsuridoro is a traditional Japanese hanging lantern, suspended from eaves, veranda beams, or garden structures to cast a warm, diffused glow at night. This antique example, dating to the Taisho period (1912-1926), is constructed from bronze and displays the graceful architectural vocabulary of classical Japanese lantern design: a steeply pitched pagoda-style pyramidal roof with extended eave rods, a domed finial cap with a cast hanging bail, pierced decorative metalwork below the roofline, and elegantly splayed curving legs at the base. Each side panel features a frosted glass pane set within a quatrefoil cutout bronze frame, diffusing light softly in all directions. At least one panel is hinged to swing open, allowing access to the interior for lighting. Patches of green verdigris patina on the lower frame and corner joints speak to the lantern's genuine age and outdoor heritage, lending the wabi-sabi aesthetic that collectors of Japanese antique metalwork prize most highly.

Today this striking tsuridoro lantern translates beautifully into modern interiors and outdoor spaces alike. Fitted with a battery-operated LED candle or a small electric conversion kit, it becomes a one-of-a-kind pendant light for an entryway, covered porch, or reading nook -- an instant focal point in any Japandi style or minimalist decor scheme. Display it on a decorative hook in a living room or home office as a sculptural accent, or hang it in a zen garden or courtyard to recapture its original purpose. Its compact size and self-contained structure also make it a stunning tabletop lantern centerpiece for a dining room or meditation space. A truly unique housewarming gift for collectors of antique Japanese craft or anyone drawn to the quiet beauty of antique Asian lighting.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
