Antique Japanese Tsuridoro Hanging Lantern, Taisho era, 1912-1926 | SKU: 26J-0758-2

A pagoda-roofed bronze lantern with frosted glass panels and rich verdigris patina -- an exceptional piece of antique Japanese lighting.

A tsuridoro is a traditional Japanese hanging lantern, suspended from the eaves of a home, temple corridor, or engawa veranda to cast a soft, ambient glow. This handcrafted example, dating to the Taisho era (1912-1926), is constructed from bronze alloy sheet worked into a refined architectural form: a broad, gently pitched pagoda roof with projecting rafter-tip finials, a decorative cutwork frieze of stylized floral and cloud motifs beneath the roofline, and elegantly outward-splaying curved legs that give the body a graceful, lantern-stand silhouette. Each side panel is fitted with frosted milk glass set within a cloud-collar (rinkaku) shaped aperture -- a classic motif drawn from Japanese Buddhist decorative arts -- allowing candlelight or an early electric bulb to diffuse with a warm, diffused glow. A hinged door panel provides access to the interior, secured with a small wire latch, while a looped suspension ring at the crown allows the piece to hang freely from a hook or chain. The overall surface has developed a deep, uneven verdigris patina consistent with over a century of natural aging -- precisely the wabi-sabi aesthetic that collectors of Japanese antique lighting seek.

Today, this tsuridoro lantern is as versatile as it is beautiful. Rewired for a small Edison-style bulb, it makes a stunning pendant light for an entryway, reading nook, or Japandi-style dining area -- the frosted glass panels casting the same soft, diffused light they were designed to produce. Displayed without a bulb, it serves equally well as a living room accent or covered patio decor piece, housing a flickering LED candle for a dramatic atmospheric effect. Its compact, self-contained form also makes it a rare and thoughtful housewarming gift or gift for collectors of Japanese antique furniture and decorative arts. The verdigris bronze body and cloud-motif glass combine effortlessly with natural materials and minimalist decor, bridging Meiji-era craft traditions with the sensibilities of the contemporary home.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
