A square-form cast bronze koro with pierced cloud-motif lid, swing bail handle, and raised auspicious characters -- a refined example of Taisho-era Japanese decorative bronzework.
A koro is a traditional Japanese incense burner, used in both household and ceremonial settings to burn aromatic woods and incense cones. This handcrafted Japanese antique koro is cast in bronze with a warm honey-brown patina and areas of natural green verdigris, evidence of genuine age and use. Each face of the faceted square body features a boldly raised character set against a finely textured diaper-pattern ground -- a classic decorative device in Japanese antique metalwork evoking auspicious blessings. A swing bail handle with ringed mounts arches over the body, allowing the burner to be carried or displayed with ease. The flat recessed base shows concentric lathe-turning marks consistent with period Japanese casting practice. The overall quality of relief casting and surface finish places this firmly in the tradition of Taisho-era Japanese bronze craft.
Today this compact and sculptural koro works beautifully as a living room accent or meditation space focal point -- display it on a shelf or altar with a sprig of dried botanicals tucked inside for a wabi-sabi aesthetic that feels both timeless and modern. It pairs naturally with Japandi-style interiors, sitting alongside raw linen, aged wood, and natural stone. Collectors of Japanese antique metalwork will appreciate its complete set of original components: body, removable pierced lid, and swing bail. It also makes a distinctive housewarming gift or gift for collectors drawn to East Asian art and craft history.
A striking piece of Japanese antique bronzework -- richly detailed, complete with its original lid, and ready to bring quiet beauty to any modern interior.
We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.
All antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
