Vintage Japanese Cast Iron Pagoda Furin Wind Chime, Heisei 1990-2018 | SKU: 26J-0613

A cast iron pagoda-form furin with openwork body, heart cutouts, and a suspended bell clapper -- complete with original box and tanzaku paper strip.

A furin is a traditional Japanese wind chime hung from eaves, garden pergolas, or covered porches, prized for the soft, clear tone it produces as the breeze catches the tanzaku paper strip and sets the interior clapper swinging. This example takes a pagoda-lantern form -- a popular and charming variation on the classic round-body furin -- cast in iron and finished in a deep forest green that evokes the look of aged temple ironwork. The two-tiered body features a flared, upswept roofline with radiating ribs, a band of vertical slot openings around the upper chamber, and a scalloped lower skirt pierced with heart-shaped cutouts. The separate bell-shaped clapper, embossed with geometric banding, hangs from the body on a braided purple cord, while a matching green link chain with ring hanger completes the assembly. The delicate tanzaku strip with hand-brushed calligraphy -- the paper sail that catches the wind -- is also included. The set retains its original green cardboard presentation box, making it a complete and gift-ready example of vintage Japanese craft.

In a modern home this vintage Japanese iron furin brings both visual charm and gentle ambient sound to any outdoor or indoor space. Hang it from a covered porch, garden pergola, or balcony beam as a living room accent or garden decor statement in a Japandi style or wabi-sabi aesthetic setting. Indoors, it works beautifully displayed on a hook in an entryway or reading nook, where even a gentle air current will coax a soft ring from the clapper. Its sculptural pagoda silhouette and rich green finish also make it a striking tabletop or shelf display piece without hanging -- a unique housewarming gift or gift for Japanophiles who appreciate handcrafted Japanese decorative arts. The complete original box adds collector appeal and makes presentation effortless.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
