Vintage Japanese Iron Furin Wind Chime, Late Showa 1966-1989 | SKU: 26J-0557

A hand-forged iron furin wind chime with artisan-shaped rods, a decorative striker, and an original calligraphed paper wind sail -- a rare example of vintage Japanese craft.

A furin is a traditional Japanese wind bell or wind chime, hung from eaves, garden pergolas, and temple porches to welcome the summer breeze and mark the passing of the season with soft, melodic tones. Unlike mass-produced wind chimes, this example is distinguished by its hand-forged iron construction: each suspended rod has been individually worked, resulting in subtly varied profiles -- one features a graceful scroll-curl at the top, another a flat angular head, while others taper cleanly. The forged crossbar from which they hang shows carefully notched seats and knotted cord ties, all hallmarks of deliberate artisan production. At the center, a small starburst-shaped iron striker piece catches passing air and sets the rods singing. The original washi (Japanese paper) wind sail -- known as the tanzaku -- hangs below on a fine cord, bearing hand-brushed calligraphy that identifies this as a furin and names its place of origin, adding an irreplaceable layer of provenance to this piece of Japanese vintage metalwork.

Today this vintage furin translates beautifully into a range of modern home settings. Hang it from a covered porch, balcony railing, or garden pergola as a striking outdoor accent -- the deep, quiet ring of iron is far more meditative than the bright jingle of glass or aluminum chimes, and suits a wabi-sabi aesthetic or Japandi style interior perfectly. Indoors, it makes an exceptional wall display or living room accent piece when hung stationary against a white or wood-paneled wall, its dark iron silhouette reading almost like sculptural art. It would also make a deeply thoughtful housewarming gift or a gift for collectors of Japanese vintage pieces and Asian decorative arts seeking something genuinely handcrafted and historically grounded.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
