Vintage Japanese Ikebana Vase, 1980s, Showa Era (SKU 25D-332-2-5)
Minimalist Showa-era stoneware vase with warm, woodfired-style tones and signed tomobako box
This quietly striking vintage Japanese vase presents a pure cylindrical silhouette, its surface finished in earthy browns that gradate from soft umber to charcoal. The unglazed stoneware body has the subdued sheen and subtle firing shadows associated with woodfired-style wares, giving the piece a wabi-sabi presence that feels both rustic and refined. Fine throwing rings circle the form, adding rhythm without disturbing the overall simplicity.
The generous, softly rounded mouth makes this an ideal hanaire for ikebana, while its compact, tapering profile also suits it as a sculptural object on a tokonoma or modern shelf. The base bears the potter’s mark, and the vase is accompanied by its original signed wooden tomobako, underscoring its status as a studio work from late 20th-century Japan.
