Japanese Usu and Kine Mortar and Mallet Set | Vintage Mochi Pounding Tool & Wabi-Sabi Wood Decor, 1966-1989 (Late Showa), SKU 26M-986-1
A beautifully carved wooden usu and kine set -- rich grain, sculptural form, and the quiet warmth of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
An usu is a traditional Japanese mortar used with a kine, or wooden mallet, most commonly for pounding steamed rice into mochi. This vintage Japanese set features a substantial cylindrical wooden usu with a deep hollowed interior and beautifully visible wood grain throughout. The warm brown tone of the mortar shows natural variation, with bold flowing grain patterns that give the piece a strong organic presence. Paired with it is a lighter-toned wooden kine, shaped with a long handle and rectangular striking head, creating a beautiful contrast between the two woods.
While originally made as a practical tool for food preparation, this Late Showa era usu and kine set now works wonderfully as a decorative object for the modern home. The mortar has a simple, sculptural form that fits beautifully into a wabi-sabi, Japandi, rustic, or natural interior. It can be displayed on a kitchen counter, open shelf, entry table, or sideboard as a statement piece of Japanese folk craft. The hollowed usu may also be used as a vessel-style accent for dried branches, seasonal display, or as a unique catch-all object, while the kine adds a strong visual element when displayed together.

A warm and sculptural piece of vintage Japanese craft -- originally made for everyday use, now equally beautiful as a display object that carries the quiet spirit of traditional Japanese life.
As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.
We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.
All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
