Japanese Shikki Lacquerware Decorative Plate | Wall Art & Living Room Accent, 1966-1989 (Late Showa), SKU 26M-847-1
A masterwork of Japanese urushi lacquer -- deep black ground, gold-leaf moon motif, and richly detailed botanical maki-e, presented in its original signed wooden box.
A shikki decorative plate is a traditional Japanese lacquerware display piece, crafted not for everyday dining but as a collector's object meant to be admired. This exceptional example features a luminous jet-black urushi lacquer ground built up over a wooden base in the time-honored manner of Japanese antique lacquerware. At the center, a boldly placed gold-leaf teardrop -- evoking a harvest moon or a ginkgo leaf -- anchors the composition, its aged amber surface traced with fine brushwork depicting grasses and foliage. Surrounding this focal point, the entire field of the plate is animated with an intricate maki-e (sprinkled-gold) design of wildflowers, daisy-like blooms, rounded petals, and trailing stems rendered in rich burnished gold against the darkness. The reverse is finished in an equally flawless black lacquer, and the plate rests on a gently curved foot ring. The piece is accompanied by its original kiri (paulownia) wood presentation box, which bears an inscription identifying this as a decorative plate (kazari-zara) in the Wajima-nuri tradition -- one of Japan's most celebrated regional lacquer styles -- with calligraphy attributing the work to a named artisan studio. This is handcrafted Japanese craft of the highest order.
In a modern home, this vintage Japanese lacquerware plate makes a striking living room accent displayed on a plate stand or shallow shelf, where its dramatic black-and-gold palette complements both Japandi style interiors and minimalist decor. It works equally well as a bedroom decor focal point on a dresser or mantelpiece, lending the quiet elegance of wabi-sabi aesthetics to any space. The piece is also a sophisticated entryway accent -- placed on a console table, it greets guests with unmistakable Japanese artistry. Complete with its original wooden box, it makes a truly unique gift for collectors, art lovers, or anyone passionate about Japanese decorative arts.
