Vintage Japanese Cast Iron Tetsubin, Late Showa 1966-1989 | SKU: 26J-0550-7
A compact cast iron tetsubin with scrolling arabesque relief, bamboo-wrapped bail handle, and a rich age-darkened patina -- a wabi-sabi treasure steeped in Japanese tea culture.
A tetsubin is a traditional Japanese cast iron kettle used to heat water for the tea ceremony and everyday tea preparation. This compact example displays the hallmarks of skilled Japanese ironwork: a flattened globular body cast with an all-over hammered texture and encircled by a raised band of scrolling arabesque relief, a design motif rooted in classical Japanese decorative arts. The short straight spout is cast integral to the body, and the flat iron lid -- fitted with a rounded knob finial and a small steam vent -- seats snugly within the collar. The square-profile bail handle is wrapped in tightly segmented bamboo, providing a warm natural grip that contrasts beautifully with the dark iron. Surface oxidation and minor rust patina are consistent with the piece's age and speak honestly to its life as a working vessel of vintage Japanese craft.
Today this tetsubin makes a compelling decorative accent well beyond the tea room. Displayed on a kitchen shelf, side table, or open bookcase, its deep iron color and hand-cast texture bring an immediate wabi-sabi aesthetic to minimalist decor and Japandi-style interiors alike. It works equally well as a living room accent piece -- set on a wooden tray alongside a small ceramic cup or ikebana arrangement -- or as a unique housewarming gift for collectors and Japanophiles who appreciate authentic vintage Japanese ironwork. Because the interior condition has not been verified, we recommend enjoying this piece as a display object rather than for active brewing.
