Vintage Japanese Cast Iron Tetsubin, Late Showa 1966-1989 | SKU: 26J-0550-2
A compact vintage cast iron tetsubin with relief cartouche decoration and a removable strainer -- a tactile piece of Japanese tea culture for the modern home.
A tetsubin is a traditional Japanese cast iron kettle or teapot used to brew and serve tea, prized for its heat retention and the distinctive mineral quality it lends to hot water. This compact example features a wide, flaring disc-shaped body that tapers to a broad flat base -- a silhouette typical of Showa-era production tetsubin made for everyday use in the Japanese household. The exterior is finished in a richly textured pebbled iron surface, and around the body a series of relief-cast cartouches -- each enclosing characters in the classic seal-script style -- adds a layer of literary elegance to the utilitarian form. A short straight spout, a fitted cast iron lid with a square knob and steam vent, and a sweeping arched bail handle complete the piece. Inside, a removable perforated metal strainer basket sits at the base, showing honest wear from genuine use -- a mark of authenticity that collectors of vintage Japanese craft will appreciate.
Today this tetsubin makes a striking living room accent or kitchen shelf display in a Japandi-style or wabi-sabi aesthetic interior. Its compact 5-inch footprint suits a side table, mantelpiece, or open shelving arrangement where its dark iron presence anchors a curated vignette. It also works beautifully as a bedside accent or home office conversation piece alongside natural materials like stone, linen, and wood. A thoughtful housewarming gift or unique gift for Japanophiles and tea lovers, this piece carries the quiet gravitas of mid-century Japanese ironwork and pairs naturally with minimalist decor.
