Vintage Japanese Soroban (Abacus), Taisho Merry Milk Branded, Taisho 1912-1926 | SKU: 26J-829-5

A rare branded soroban from Meiji Merry Milk -- a charming piece of vintage Japanese commercial history

A soroban is the traditional Japanese abacus, refined over centuries into one of the most elegant and efficient manual calculation tools ever devised. Used daily in shops, schools, and offices throughout Japan well into the Taisho era, the soroban was an essential fixture of commercial life before electronic calculators became widespread. This example features a sturdy rectangular wooden frame with a warm honey-brown finish, a central divider bar separating the upper and lower bead sections, and rows of hand-turned bicone beads threaded on metal rods. The bead layout -- with multiple beads per rod in the lower register -- reflects an older configuration predating the modern 1/4 standard, lending this piece additional historical character. What makes this soroban especially collectible is the back panel, which bears carved and painted text reading "Meiji Merii Miruku" (Meiji Merry Milk), the iconic Japanese dairy brand. Promotional soroban were commonly distributed by corporations during Taisho period as branded giveaways, making this a genuine artifact of vintage Japanese craft and corporate culture.

Today, this vintage Japanese abacus works beautifully as a living room accent or home office display piece -- a tactile conversation starter that bridges functional history and minimalist decor. Leaned against a bookshelf or propped on a desk, it brings an authentic wabi-sabi aesthetic to any interior. Its slim profile and warm wood tones pair naturally with Japandi style arrangements alongside ceramics, washi paper, or natural fiber objects. It also makes a unique gift for collectors, math enthusiasts, or anyone with a passion for Japanese vintage curiosities and mid-century ephemera.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
