Japanese Nagamochi Storage Chest | Vintage Trunk & Living Room Accent, 1966-1989 (Late Showa), SKU 25D-462-1
A handcrafted Japanese wooden chest with a locking front clasp, side carry handles, and richly figured grain -- a rare and functional antique storage trunk.
A nagamochi is a traditional Japanese lidded storage chest used in households to safeguard clothing, textiles, documents, and valued personal effects. This example, dating to the Late Showa period, is constructed from a boldly grained hardwood -- possibly sugi (Japanese cedar) -- finished in a deep reddish-brown lacquer that has mellowed beautifully with age. The wood grain swirls dramatically across every panel, giving each face of the chest its own natural pattern, a hallmark of handcrafted Japanese antique furniture. The chest rests on small block feet that lift it cleanly off the floor, a practical design detail common to Japanese storage pieces of this era. Inside, the roomy single-cavity interior is unlined and reveals the natural wood, consistent with everyday domestic use.
In a modern home, this vintage Japanese chest is as versatile as it is striking. Its compact, rectangular form and warm lacquered finish suit a wide range of interior styles -- from Japandi style and wabi-sabi aesthetic to mid-century modern living rooms. Use it as a coffee table trunk with hidden storage, a bedroom blanket chest at the foot of the bed, or an entryway furniture accent that doubles as a drop zone for scarves and accessories. The original locking clasp, still accompanied by its key, adds a sense of occasion, while the cast metal side handles make it easy to reposition. A thoughtful housewarming gift or a distinctive find for collectors of Japanese antique furniture.
