Vintage Japanese Kamidana Shrine with Fish-Motif Brass Door Clasp and Nagare-Zukuri Chigi Roof, Mid-Showa Era 1946-1965

A beautifully preserved vintage kamidana in nagare-zukuri style -- handcrafted in light softwood with ornate brass fittings and a striking fish-motif door clasp.

A kamidana -- literally "shelf of the gods" -- is a miniature Shinto household shrine traditionally mounted in the home to enshrine kami amulets (ofuda) and receive daily offerings of water, salt, and sake. This example follows the classic nagare-zukuri architectural form, recognized by its gently sweeping asymmetrical roof, crossed chigi finials at each gable end, and cylindrical katsuogi log ornaments along the roof ridge -- hallmarks of Japan's most revered shrine architecture. The double doors at the center are secured by a large cast brass locking clasp featuring an arching fish motif in fine relief, flanked by ornately pierced brass corner fittings. A front staircase with brass-capped newel posts and engraved brass step facings leads up to a raised offering platform, completing the ensemble with a level of detail rarely seen in everyday domestic shrines. The pale, fine-grained wood -- consistent with hinoki (Japanese cypress) or a similar light-toned softwood -- lends the piece the clean, sacred aesthetic central to Shinto craft tradition. This is a fine example of vintage Japanese religious folk craft from the mid-Showa era.

In a modern home, this kamidana makes a captivating living room accent or meditation corner focal point -- perfect for displaying on a floating shelf, bookcase, or mantelpiece as a sculptural statement piece. Its architectural detail and warm natural wood tone suit Japandi style interiors and wabi-sabi aesthetic spaces equally well. It also works beautifully as a display cabinet for small treasured objects, miniatures, or botanicals, or as a one-of-a-kind bedroom decor accent that brings a sense of calm and ceremony to daily life. A truly unique housewarming gift or gift for collectors of Japanese vintage furniture and Shinto folk art.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
