Vintage Japanese Kamidana Shinto Altar with Cutwork Front, Mid Showa 1946-1965
A compact vintage Japanese household altar with a roofed form, warm softwood grain, and hand-cut decorative openings.
This vintage Japanese kamidana, or Shinto household altar, is made in a simple architectural form with a projecting sloped roof, enclosed body, and broad rectangular base. The front panel is decorated with two tall hand-cut openings and a small heart-shaped cutout below, giving the piece a distinctive folk character while preserving its devotional presence. Visible nail construction, straight wood grain, and a large natural knot on one side all contribute to its honest handmade appearance.
Kamidana were traditionally placed in the home as a setting for Shinto devotion, often elevated and used to house or present sacred papers or related offerings. In a modern interior, this piece can still be appreciated as a traditional altar or displayed as a sculptural example of mid-Showa Japanese woodworking. Its compact size and warm natural wood tone make it especially appealing for interiors that favor rustic, mingei-inspired, or Japandi-adjacent decor.
