Vintage Japanese Haribako Sewing Chest, Mid Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26J-0820-1
A compact Japanese sewing chest with a lift-top compartment, sliding tray, and graduated drawers, finished in richly figured wood with dark metal pulls.
This vintage Japanese haribako is a small sewing chest designed to keep needlework tools neatly arranged in one place. The form combines a hinged top compartment with a removable sliding tray above a practical drawer arrangement below: two narrow drawers on the left, a small side drawer on the right, and a wider lower drawer spanning the base. The front is finished in dramatic swirling grain, while the sides and back show a straighter grain pattern, giving the piece visual warmth and character from every angle. Dark metal bail pulls and a small round knob complete the tidy, workmanlike design.
Today, this haribako is wonderfully suited to everyday organization beyond its original purpose. It works beautifully for sewing notions, embroidery supplies, thread, scissors, and measuring tapes, while the upper compartment and tray also lend themselves to jewelry, letters, stationery, or other small personal items. Its compact footprint makes it easy to place on a shelf, dresser, or desk, where it adds a distinctly Japanese vintage accent while remaining genuinely useful.
