Vintage Japanese Sewing Box (SKU 25D-244)

Showa-era tansu-style sewing chest with striking figured wood grain and multiple drawers for organized storage.

This compact Japanese sewing box, or haribako, is crafted in the manner of a miniature tansu chest, with a beautifully figured surface that recalls classic burled and tiger-grain finishes. The warm amber-brown tone highlights the swirling patterns across every face, while simple metal bail handles add a refined, utilitarian touch in keeping with mid-Showa sensibilities.

Designed for storing sewing notions and small accessories, the front is arranged with a practical mix of wide and narrow drawers, each opening smoothly to reveal generous interior space. Whether used as a vintage Japanese sewing box, a desktop tansu for stationery, or a distinctive accent in an entryway or studio, it brings an authentic period charm and a strong decorative presence to any interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
