Showa-era tansu-style sewing chest with striking figured wood grain and multiple drawers for organized storage.
This compact Japanese sewing box, or haribako, is crafted in the manner of a miniature tansu chest, with a beautifully figured surface that recalls classic burled and tiger-grain finishes. The warm amber-brown tone highlights the swirling patterns across every face, while simple metal bail handles add a refined, utilitarian touch in keeping with mid-Showa sensibilities.
Designed for storing sewing notions and small accessories, the front is arranged with a practical mix of wide and narrow drawers, each opening smoothly to reveal generous interior space. I'm almost embarrassed to say that I have 6 of these plus many other small drawer boxes. This one is beautiful. I love the wood grain. The condition of this box is excellent. The only thing missing is the ruler but I have found only one, ever, that still had it. These are great for so many uses. I have 2 for jewelry, one for small metal working tools and another for sewing tools and on and on. If anyone reading this is wondering what to do with one think outside the sewing box.
