A small and beautifully shaped Japanese ceramic oil vessel with a fitted lid, side pouring spout, and woven overhead handle.

This vintage Japanese abura tsubo is a compact covered pottery vessel traditionally associated with holding and pouring oil. The form is low and wide with a gently domed shoulder, a small projecting spout at the side, and a removable lid topped by a rounded knop. An arched woven handle rises above the vessel and is secured to ceramic lug mounts, giving the piece a practical, hand-finished character. The glaze is a warm deep brown with subtle olive-toned variation, and the body stands on three small feet.

At just under 4 inches in diameter, this piece displays well on an open shelf, in a grouping of Japanese folk ceramics, or as part of a rustic kitchen or mingei-inspired interior.
