Vintage Japanese Shoji Andon Electric Table Lamp with Integrated Storage Cabinet, Showa 1966-1989 | SKU: 26J-0358
A shoji-style electric andon lantern in bold red lacquer -- combining warm ambient light with integrated small-cabinet storage in one charming Showa-era piece.
An andon is a traditional Japanese lantern designed to house a light source within a wood-framed, paper-paneled enclosure -- a form that dates back centuries and was widely adapted into electric table lamps during the Showa era. This vintage example is finished in a striking deep red lacquer and built around a rectangular shoji-style light box whose translucent paper panels -- likely washi or a washi-style paper -- diffuse the bulb's glow into soft, warm light. A natural bamboo carry rod spans the top of the arched upright frame, nodding to the portable andon lanterns of earlier generations and adding a tactile contrast against the lacquered wood. The craftsmanship reflects the mid-to-late Showa period taste for blending classical Japanese aesthetics with practical electric convenience -- making it a collectible example of vintage Japanese decorative lighting.
Beyond its original role as a bedside or desk lamp, this piece doubles as a charming small organizer for the modern home. The shoji lamp section sits beside an integrated storage block featuring a small hinged cabinet door faced in decorative fabric with a silk tassel pull, and a shallow black lacquer drawer at the base with a metal bar pull -- ideal for stashing jewelry, keepsakes, remote controls, or bedside essentials. The open compartments at the top of the storage block can hold pens, brushes, or small candles. Styled on a nightstand, writing desk, or living room side table, it brings instant wabi-sabi aesthetic warmth and Japandi-style charm. Note: the vintage braided fabric electrical cord is original to the piece; buyers wishing to use the lamp function should have the wiring inspected by a qualified electrician before use. Sold as a decorative collectible. Makes a unique gift for collectors and Japanophiles alike.
