Vintage Japanese Reticulated Porcelain Koro Incense Burner with Shishi Finial and Lotus Stand, Mid Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26J-0716
A masterwork of reticulated white porcelain -- globular koro with shishi finial, lotus stand, and original wooden storage box
A koro is a traditional Japanese incense burner, used in domestic settings, Buddhist altar arrangements, and formal tea ceremony spaces to purify the air and create an atmosphere of quiet contemplation. This exceptional example is formed from fine white-glazed porcelain and features an elaborately reticulated globular body pierced through with a lattice of geometric openwork and raised figural motifs -- likely depicting shishi (lion-dogs) among scrolling foliage -- a design hallmark of the celebrated Hirado and Mikawachi porcelain traditions of Kyushu. The domed lid, itself fully pierced to allow incense smoke to curl freely upward, is crowned by a hand-modeled shishi finial seated in a calm, authoritative pose. Flat ear handles flank the body on either side, and the piece rests on a separately formed lotus-petal stand raised on scrolled feet -- a composition that speaks to the refined craft sensibility of early postwar Japanese porcelain production. A blue underglaze maker's mark is visible on the interior of the lid, and the piece retains its original paulownia-style wooden storage box, a strong indicator that this was produced as a presentation-quality gift object.
In a modern home, this vintage Japanese koro makes a breathtaking living room accent or entryway focal point -- display it on a console table, mantelpiece, or floating shelf to bring a wabi-sabi aesthetic and sculptural elegance to any space. Its all-white palette works beautifully within Japandi style interiors, minimalist decor schemes, and alongside natural linen, stone, and pale wood furnishings. The pierced body creates an ever-changing play of light and shadow that adds quiet drama whether displayed by daylight or beside a lamp. It also functions as a working incense burner for those who practice kodo (the Japanese art of incense), or as a stunning gift for collectors of Japanese vintage ceramics and Asian decorative arts -- a truly unique housewarming gift or gift for Japanophiles with a discerning eye.
