A yofuku-dansu is a Japanese Western-style wardrobe cabinet that emerged during the Meiji and Taisho eras as Japan adopted Western dress and domestic customs. By the early Showa period, skilled Japanese craftsmen had refined the form considerably, producing tall double-door armoires that blended the scale and function of European wardrobes with distinctly Japanese hardware sensibilities. This substantial example is constructed from straight-grained hardwood -- likely keyaki (zelkova) or a related dense native species -- finished to a warm honey tone that has deepened beautifully with age. The paneled double doors are well-proportioned and cleanly fitted, opening to reveal a full-height hanging space with an interior rod for garments, a small inset mirror panel on the inner face of one door for dressing convenience, and a neatly paneled interior.
