Japanese Kabin Ikebana Vase | Vintage Flower Vase & Living Room Accent, 1946 - 1965 (Mid Showa), SKU 26M-644-2
A richly hand-painted porcelain kabin adorned with a jubilant all-over floral motif and gilt detailing -- presented in its original wooden storage box.
A kabin is a traditional Japanese flower vase designed to hold ikebana, the centuries-old art of Japanese flower arranging. This striking example is crafted from fine white porcelain in a gently tapering egg form, its entire body blanketed in a densely packed arrangement of hand-painted blooms -- peonies, chrysanthemums, camellia, and daisy-like florals rendered in a vivid palette of pink, purple, green, orange, and white against a warm gilded ground. The lower register is finished with a rust-red Greek-key border trimmed in gold, and the rim is edged with a burnished gold band, giving the piece a refined, celebratory quality consistent with high-end Japanese gift porcelain of the mid Showa era. A maker's mark in red overglaze appears on the unglazed foot rim, and the vase retains its original signed wooden tomobako (presentation box), confirming it was produced as a named-artist or kiln-branded gift piece. This style of densely floral polychrome decoration -- known in Japanese ceramic tradition as hanazukushi, or "all-flowers" -- was a specialty of several renowned kiln regions including Kutani and Kyoto-ware studios during this period.
Today this handcrafted Japanese porcelain vase is as versatile as it is beautiful. Display it as a standalone living room accent on a console, mantle, or bookshelf -- its jewel-like all-over decoration makes it a true conversation piece even without flowers. Fill it with a simple spray of fresh or dried stems for an effortless ikebana-inspired arrangement that suits both Japandi style interiors and maximalist decor alike. It also makes a unique housewarming gift or gift for collectors of Japanese antique ceramics, arriving with its original tomobako for an authentic presentation. The compact, upright form works equally well on a bedroom dresser, dining table centerpiece, or home office shelf.
