A striking red lacquer jubako set complete with fitted carrying stand -- bold floral motifs, aged metal fittings, and mid-century Japanese craftsmanship in one vivid ensemble.
A jubako is a traditional Japanese stacking box set used to present and transport festive foods, most famously osechi ryori -- the elaborately arranged New Year's dishes prepared to celebrate the first days of January. Tiered to allow multiple courses or food types to be carried together in a single elegant package, jubako have been central to Japanese ceremonial dining for centuries. This vintage example features multiple lacquered tiers finished in a warm vermilion-red, each panel decorated with delicately painted gold floral sprays -- open blossoms, curling stems, and budding branches rendered in a fluid, painterly style consistent with mid-Showa production. The set rests in a dedicated carrying stand fitted with an arched handle and decorative cast metal corner brackets at both the top and base, engraved with fine cloud and floral patterns. When disassembled, the stand reveals a black-lacquered interior tray -- a detail that speaks to the care and completeness of this vintage Japanese lacquerware set.
Today, this jubako set is as much a living room accent as it is a collector's treasure. Displayed assembled on a sideboard or entry table, the bold red-and-gold palette makes an immediate statement in Japandi style or wabi-sabi inspired interiors. The individual tiers can be separated and used as decorative organizers -- on a vanity for jewelry and hair accessories, on a desk for small supplies, or arranged as a tiered display for dried botanicals or holiday sweets. The carrying stand alone functions as a sculptural display frame. A genuinely unique housewarming gift for collectors or Japanophiles who appreciate handcrafted Japanese lacquerware with authentic ceremonial history.
A radiant piece of vintage Japanese lacquerware that brings ceremonial color and timeless craft to any modern home.
We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.
