Vintage Japanese Kamakura-bori Lacquer Jubako (Stacking Box), Mid Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26M-790
A signed Kamakura-bori lacquer jubako with boldly hand-carved chrysanthemum motifs and a rich oxblood finish -- presented in its original wooden storage box.
A jubako is a traditional Japanese stacking box used to hold celebratory foods during festivals and the New Year season, and this exceptional example is crafted in the Kamakura-bori style -- a technique originating in the Kamakura period in which designs are first carved in relief into a wooden base and then coated with multiple layers of lacquer. The exterior displays sweeping chrysanthemum blooms and curling vine scrolls carved across every surface, set against a finely pebbled ground that catches the light beautifully. The deep oxblood red lacquer -- a hallmark of classic Kamakura-bori -- has developed a warm, lustrous patina over decades of careful keeping. The interior of each tier is finished in smooth black lacquer, providing a striking contrast. The piece is signed by its maker, "Mitsuhashi-saku," and comes with its original inscribed kiri-wood storage box, confirming this as a named artisan work -- a distinction that elevates it well above typical vintage Japanese craft.
In a modern home, this vintage Japanese lacquerware box makes a stunning living room accent or entryway display piece -- set on a sideboard or console to showcase its extraordinary carved surface. The stacking tiers work beautifully as a jewelry box or ring-and-accessory organizer on a bedroom vanity, while the individual tiers can be used separately as desk organizers or catchall trays in a home office. Its wabi-sabi aesthetic and Japandi style appeal make it a compelling housewarming gift or a unique gift for collectors of Japanese vintage lacquerware. The included wooden tomobako (original storage box) adds significant provenance value for serious collectors.
