Vintage Japanese Four-Panel Folding Screen (Tsuitate), Late Showa 1966-1989 | SKU: 26J-0703

A four-panel folding screen with woven bamboo slat infill, carved wood cutout panels, and a deep lacquered wood frame -- a striking piece of vintage Japanese decorative furniture.

A tsuitate is a traditional Japanese folding screen used to divide interior spaces, provide privacy, and add visual warmth to a room. This four-panel example, dating to the Late Showa era, reflects the refined domestic craft of mid-to-late 20th century Japan. Each panel is filled with tightly woven bamboo slats bound with cord, lending the screen a warm, natural texture and a quiet, rhythmic pattern. Horizontal lacquered rails divide each panel into sections, while a natural bamboo pole accent rail runs across the upper register of each panel -- a refined detail that echoes the screen's bamboo infill. The dark reddish-brown lacquered wood frame provides strong contrast against the honey-toned bamboo, and carved wood insert panels at mid-height depict floral and bird motifs -- plum blossom, crane, and bamboo forms consistent with classic Japanese nature imagery. The base rail of each panel is fitted with pierced wood cutouts in a repeating geometric and floral pattern, adding an additional layer of handcrafted detail. Metal hinge hardware connects the four panels and allows the screen to fold flat for easy storage or repositioning.

In a modern home, this vintage Japanese room divider brings both function and Japandi-style beauty to any living space. Use it as a bedroom divider to create a private dressing area or reading nook, as a living room accent to frame a seating arrangement, or as an entryway screen to define a welcoming transition zone. The warm bamboo tones and carved nature motifs make it an ideal complement to minimalist decor, natural material interiors, and wabi-sabi aesthetic settings. It also works beautifully as a backdrop for indoor plants, a photography prop, or a decorative accent wall alternative. A thoughtful housewarming gift or gift for collectors of Japanese vintage furniture and Asian decorative arts.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
