Vintage Japanese Four-Panel Bamboo Folding Screen (Tsuitate), Late Showa 1966-1989 | SKU: 26J-0702
A four-panel folding screen with woven bamboo panels, natural bamboo rod rails, and floral inlay accents -- a quietly striking piece of vintage Japanese craft.
A tsuitate is a traditional Japanese folding screen used to divide interior space, direct airflow, and create a sense of intimate enclosure within a room. This four-panel example follows that functional tradition while showcasing the material warmth of handcrafted bamboo work popular in mid-to-late Showa-era homes and ryokan interiors. Each panel features tightly woven split-bamboo infill sections held within a dark red-lacquered wood frame, the slender vertical reeds bound at intervals with natural cord to create a pleasing horizontal rhythm across the surface. The open upper section of each panel is fitted with natural round bamboo rods set between shaped crossbars, allowing light to filter through while maintaining a visual barrier -- a hallmark of Japanese vintage furniture design that balances openness with privacy.
In a modern home, this screen is as versatile as it is decorative. Use it as a bedroom divider to carve out a dressing corner or reading nook, or position it in a living room or home office to define zones with a wabi-sabi aesthetic that no flat-pack partition can replicate. The warm honey tones of the bamboo pair beautifully with natural linen, rattan, and aged wood in Japandi-style or mid-century modern interiors. The carved and pierced bamboo-motif apron panels at the base and the light-toned floral medallion inlays at the mid-section add an artisanal touch that makes this a genuinely unique gift for collectors, Japanophiles, or anyone curating a nature-inspired home.
