Vintage Japanese Bamboo Folding Screen (Tsuitate), Late Showa 1966-1989 | SKU: 26J-0661

A handcrafted multi-panel folding screen with woven bamboo slat panels, pierced plum blossom and bird motifs, and a warm honey-stained softwood frame -- a graceful expression of the wabi-sabi aesthetic.

A tsuitate is a traditional Japanese folding screen used to define space, provide privacy, and bring natural beauty into the interior. This vintage example from the Late Showa era features tightly woven bamboo slat panels set within a stained softwood frame, secured at each joint by oval black iron hinge plates that allow the screen to fold and stand freely. The end panels are finished with a gently arched upper rail -- a refined design detail that softens the overall silhouette. Across the mid-section of each panel, an open lattice band frames a pierced wood apron rail depicting blossom branches and birds in flight, carved in relief against the warm grain of the wood. A matching pierced apron rail runs along the base, repeating the nature motif and grounding the composition. The result is a piece of handcrafted Japanese furniture that balances structure with transparency, letting light filter through the natural bamboo while maintaining a sense of enclosure.

In a modern home, this vintage Japanese room divider screen works beautifully as a living room accent that separates a reading nook from the main seating area, or as a bedroom decor element positioned behind a bed or beside a dressing area. Its natural bamboo tones and warm wood frame complement Japandi style interiors, minimalist decor, and bohemian spaces alike. Lean it against a wall as a sculptural focal point, use it to conceal storage in an open-plan room, or place it in an entryway to welcome guests with an understated elegance. A distinctive housewarming gift or gift for collectors of vintage Japanese craft and Asian vintage furniture.

A beautifully crafted piece of vintage Japanese furniture that brings natural warmth, artisan detail, and the quiet elegance of the wabi-sabi aesthetic to any modern interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
