Vintage Japanese Bamboo Sodegaki Lattice Fence Panel, Heisei 1990-2018 | SKU: 26J-0772-2
A handcrafted bamboo lattice panel in the classic sodegaki tradition -- warm natural tones, open diamond weave, and knotted cord bindings throughout.
A sodegaki is a traditional Japanese decorative fence panel used to define space, suggest a boundary, or add a refined natural element to a garden or entryway. Unlike a full fence, sodegaki panels are intentionally compact and semi-open, designed to imply separation rather than impose it -- a principle deeply rooted in Japanese garden aesthetics. This example is built in the time-honored way: pale split-bamboo strips are woven diagonally into an open diamond lattice and secured at every crossing with dark cord tied in neat bows, while a pair of deeply mottled tiger bamboo poles serve as the top and bottom rails. Four smooth cylindrical bamboo posts anchor the corners, each one lashed firmly to the rails with wrapped cord. The contrast between the rich, dark-patinated tiger bamboo and the pale golden splits gives the panel a striking two-tone character that speaks to careful material selection -- a hallmark of quality Japanese bamboo craft.
At just over twenty inches wide and eleven inches tall, this panel is a versatile decorative accent well suited to a modern home. Stand it upright on a windowsill, shelf, or console table as a living room accent or bedroom decor piece that channels the wabi-sabi aesthetic. Lean it against a potted plant or planter grouping to frame a small indoor garden vignette. It also works beautifully as a tabletop display divider in an entryway, separating objects on a sideboard while keeping the space visually open. A thoughtful housewarming gift or a distinctive find for collectors of Japanese craft and Japandi style decor.
