Vintage Japanese Bamboo Hanakago Flower Basket, Heisei 1990-2018 | SKU: 26J-0800-2
A finely hand-woven bamboo hanakago with an arched vine handle and black cylindrical inner tube -- ready for ikebana arrangements or decorative display.
A hanakago is a traditional Japanese flower basket used as a vessel for ikebana, the centuries-old art of Japanese flower arrangement. Rather than holding water directly, the woven bamboo body cradles a separate inner tube -- included here as a dark cylindrical insert -- which holds water and stems while the basket itself remains a showcase of handcraft. This example features a tightly woven lower body that flares gently outward toward the base, transitioning to an open-lattice upper section framed by a neatly wrapped rim. Darker vine or bamboo ribs run vertically along the exterior, secured at intervals with hand-tied knots that add textural contrast against the warm honey-toned weave. The arched handle rises high above the mouth, twisted from darker vine strands and gathered at the apex in a careful knotted finish -- a hallmark of quality Japanese basket craft. The open circular base is visible when the piece is tipped, revealing the clean inner construction consistent with vintage Japanese craft production of the Heisei era.
In a modern home, this handcrafted Japanese flower basket works beautifully as a living room accent filled with dried pampas grass, seasonal branches, or a simple stem arrangement using the included water tube. Its warm natural tones and wabi-sabi aesthetic make it equally at home as a standalone decorative object on a console table, entryway shelf, or beside a reading chair -- no flowers required. It pairs effortlessly with Japandi style interiors, bringing an artisan texture that balances clean lines and natural materials. A thoughtful housewarming gift or a unique gift for collectors of Japanese folk craft and botanical decor.
