Vintage Japanese Kyo-dai Dressing Mirror Stand, Mid Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26J-0177
A richly painted mid-century kyo-dai with incised pine motifs, tilting arched mirror, and stepped multi-drawer base -- a striking piece of vintage Japanese bedroom decor.
A kyo-dai is a traditional Japanese tabletop or freestanding dressing mirror stand, used by women for daily grooming, cosmetics, and hair care. This handcrafted Japanese vintage furniture piece dates to the postwar Mid Showa era, approximately 1946-1965, when domestic craftsmen blended classical Japanese decorative sensibility with a streamlined, modernizing aesthetic. The base is finished in a deep red paint with a gold-speckled texture throughout -- a lacquer-style effect achieved through layered painted application rather than true urushi lacquer. Incised into the surface are delicate motifs consistent with crane and pine branch imagery, classic auspicious symbols in Japanese art representing longevity and good fortune. The arched, arch-top mirror pivots on ball-finial posts and is framed in matching red-painted wood. The asymmetric stepped base houses multiple pull-out drawers fitted with round wooden knobs, plus a central open well for cosmetics or grooming accessories. The plain wood interiors of the drawers reveal honest, utilitarian construction typical of early postwar Japanese craft production.
Today this kyo-dai makes a beautiful statement piece in a variety of modern interiors. Use it as a vanity mirror and jewelry organizer on a bedroom dresser, letting the stepped drawers hold rings, earrings, and small accessories in wabi-sabi style. Display it on an entryway console as a decorative accent mirror with concealed storage for keys and small items, adding a warm Japandi style touch. It also works beautifully as a desk organizer and mirror for a home office or reading nook, where its bold red finish and engraved motifs serve as a focal point. A unique housewarming gift or gift for collectors of vintage Japanese craft, this piece carries genuine mid-century character that elevates any room.
