Vintage Japanese Kyodai dressing stand, Mid Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26J-0495

A rare mid-century kyodai with dramatically figured wood grain and a compact multi-drawer chest -- handcrafted Japanese vintage furniture at its most personal.

A kyodai is a traditional Japanese tabletop dressing stand, designed to hold a pivoting mirror above a compact chest of small drawers used to organize combs, hairpins, cosmetics, and other personal grooming accessories. This vintage example from the mid-Showa era features a gracefully curved rear support post -- now absent its mirror -- rising above an upper lidded box section with a small pull-out drawer fitted with a cast metal knob pull. The lower chest section presents multiple drawers of varying sizes, each fitted with bail or ring-style metal pulls with decorative fluted rosette escutcheons. Throughout the piece, a boldly figured hardwood -- likely keyaki (zelkova) -- displays sweeping, wavy grain patterns on every exterior surface, giving the piece a visual energy rarely seen in everyday furniture. The drawer interiors show lighter, unfinished wood consistent with traditional Japanese cabinetmaking practice.

In a modern home, this compact kyodai makes an exceptionally beautiful jewelry organizer or vanity accent for bedroom decor. Its multiple drawers are perfectly scaled for rings, earrings, bracelets, and small keepsakes, while the upper lidded box can hold a watch or a favorite necklace. Displayed on a dresser or bedside table, it introduces a wabi-sabi aesthetic and warm natural wood tones that complement Japandi style interiors beautifully. It also works as a desktop organizer for a home office -- storing small tools, pens, or personal items with quiet elegance. A truly unique gift for collectors of vintage Japanese craft or Japanophiles who appreciate handcrafted Japanese furniture with genuine character.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
