Vintage Japanese Rattan Storage Box with Fitted Lid, Mid Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26J-0497
A handwoven rattan storage box with fitted lid -- quiet Mid Showa craftsmanship in warm honey tones.
A woven rattan storage box is a traditional Japanese household essential, crafted from split rattan reed woven tightly over a structural frame to create a lightweight yet durable container. During the Mid Showa era, these low-profile lidded boxes were produced throughout Japan as practical domestic storage for small personal items, folded textiles, or household sundries. This example showcases the kind of patient handcraft typical of vintage Japanese woven goods -- each reed carefully laid in a close, even pattern across all faces of both the tray and its fitted lid. The rounded corners are neatly bound, and the base tray is reinforced along its rim with wrapped rattan, giving the piece its clean rectangular form. The natural honey-brown patina has deepened warmly with age, lending the piece the quiet, unpretentious beauty of wabi-sabi aesthetic that collectors of Japanese vintage craft find so appealing.
Today this versatile vintage Japanese storage box translates beautifully into a modern home. Its slim, low-profile form makes it an ideal desk organizer for stationery, notecards, or small office supplies -- perfectly at home in a Japandi style workspace. Set on a bedroom dresser, it serves as a handsome jewelry box or watch tray, keeping small accessories neatly contained. It also works well as a living room accent piece -- displayed open on a shelf or coffee table to hold remote controls, coasters, or other everyday items. With its natural texture and warm tone, it makes a thoughtful and unique housewarming gift for anyone who appreciates handcrafted Japanese objects.
