Vintage Japanese Woven Bamboo Lidded Storage Box, Mid-Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26J-0838

A richly patinated handwoven bamboo storage box from mid-Showa Japan -- flat, lidded, and full of quiet craft.

A take bako is a traditional Japanese woven bamboo box used for neatly storing small household items, keepsakes, or correspondence. This example is hand-woven from flat-split bamboo strips in a tight, even plain-weave pattern that covers both the shallow tray base and its separate lift-off lid. Over decades of use, the bamboo has deepened to a warm reddish-brown with streaks of darker grain running through each strip -- a depth of color that no synthetic material can replicate. The rounded corners, clean silhouette, and close-fitted lid reflect the understated precision typical of vintage Japanese craft from the early postwar period. Minor age wear and a small dark mark visible on the lid interior are consistent with honest use and only add to the wabi-sabi character of this piece.

Today this handcrafted Japanese bamboo box transitions beautifully into a modern home. Set it on a desk as a stylish desktop organizer for stationery, notecards, or small tools; place it on a bedroom dresser to corral jewelry, hair accessories, or everyday carry items; or display it on a living room shelf as a Japandi-style decorative accent that doubles as hidden storage. Its flat, book-sized profile makes it equally at home in a home office or on a bathroom countertop. A thoughtful housewarming gift or a striking find for collectors of vintage Japanese craft.

A beautifully aged piece of vintage Japanese bamboo craft that brings warmth, texture, and quiet utility to any modern interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
