Japanese Chadate Shelf | Vintage Teaware Stand & Corner Display Table, 1966-1989 (Late Showa), SKU 26M-034

A graceful two-tier corner shelf in bamboo and stained hardwood -- a quiet celebration of the Japanese tea aesthetic.

A chadate-dana is a traditional Japanese display shelf designed to hold teaware, small ornaments, and seasonal arrangements near the tokonoma alcove or tea preparation area. This handsome Late Showa example features two fan-shaped shelves with gently rounded fronts and flat backs designed to sit flush against a wall or into a corner -- a practical form that was popular in Japanese homes during the high-growth decades of the 1970s and 1980s. The shelves are crafted from a stained hardwood with a fine open grain, likely nara (Japanese oak) or a similar species finished in warm amber-brown, while the upright supports and short feet are fashioned from natural bamboo poles complete with characteristic nodes. The contrast between the darker stained shelves and the honey-toned bamboo gives the piece a refined, two-tone character typical of vintage Japanese craft furniture from this era.

Today this versatile little shelf translates beautifully into a modern home in a number of ways. Tuck it into a bathroom corner to display folded towels, candles, and small plants for a Japandi-style spa atmosphere. Stand it beside a reading chair as a side table and living room accent, layering a cup, a book, and a small vase across its two tiers. It also works as an entryway accent shelf for keys, incense, and a seasonal flower -- a charming housewarming gift for anyone drawn to wabi-sabi aesthetic and natural materials. Its compact corner-friendly footprint makes it easy to place almost anywhere without crowding a room.

A charming piece of vintage Japanese antique furniture that brings the tranquil spirit of the tea room into any modern interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
