Japanese Koro Incense Burner | Decorative Accent & Altar Display, 1946-1965 (Mid Showa), SKU 26M-729-3

A richly cast bronze koro with dragon finial, taotie relief band, and tripod feet -- a striking example of handcrafted Japanese bronze work in the archaistic style.

A koro is a traditional Japanese incense burner used in Buddhist altar settings, tea ceremony rooms, and formal interiors to perfume the air with fragrant incense smoke. This Mid Showa example is cast in bronze and styled after ancient Chinese ritual bronzes, a popular aesthetic in Japanese decorative metalwork that signals refinement and scholarly taste. The globular body is encircled by a bold raised band of taotie (mythological mask) motifs flanked by meander and scroll patterns -- details that would have required considerable skill to produce. Dragon-head loop handles project from either side of the body, and the domed lid is pierced with smoke vents and crowned by a coiling dragon finial resting on a cloud base. Three cabriole-style legs, each terminating in a small beast mask, raise the vessel with elegant stability. A maker's seal is visible on the base within a cartouche, consistent with quality Japanese bronze casting of the postwar period. The overall surface has developed a warm dark-brown patina with touches of verdigris green -- the natural result of decades of age and use.

In a modern home, this Japanese antique bronze koro makes a compelling living room accent or meditation space focal point. Displayed on a shelf, mantelpiece, or side table, it brings immediate wabi-sabi aesthetic depth to any Japandi-style or minimalist decor scheme. It works equally well as a desktop statement piece in a home office or study, or grouped with other antique objects on an entryway console. Incense sticks or cones can still be burned inside it, making it fully functional as well as beautiful. With its museum-quality casting and mythological imagery, it is a unique gift for collectors, Japanophiles, and anyone who appreciates handcrafted Japanese bronze art.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
