Japanese Koro Incense Burner | Altar Decor & Meditation Accent, 1946-1965 (Mid Showa), SKU 26M-729-2
A compact cast-bronze koro with pierced lid and pedestal base -- a quietly elegant relic of mid-century Japanese ritual life.
A koro is a traditional Japanese incense burner used in Buddhist altar settings, tea ceremony spaces, and domestic shrines to carry fragrant smoke as an offering or to purify the air. This small but weighty example is cast in bronze with a warm, aged patina ranging from golden brass tones to deep brown, the result of decades of natural oxidation. The domed, removable lid is pierced with a openwork floral lattice pattern and topped with a rounded knob finial, allowing incense smoke to curl upward in fine tendrils. The rounded body sits on a stepped pedestal base engraved with geometric motifs, and the body itself is accented with small applied oval tabs and a band of fine relief detailing at the lid join -- all hallmarks of handcrafted Japanese bronze work from the mid-Showa period. The interior reveals a separate pierced inner cup that holds incense material above an ash bed, a thoughtful functional detail consistent with quality koro of this era.
Despite its petite scale -- easily held in one hand -- this vintage Japanese incense burner carries tremendous decorative presence. Displayed on a meditation altar, bedroom nightstand, or home office shelf, it brings an immediate wabi-sabi aesthetic and a sense of quiet ceremony to any interior. It pairs beautifully with a small cone or coil incense arrangement in a Japandi-style living room, or serves as a sculptural accent piece alongside dried botanicals or a single stem in a minimalist decor setting. It also makes a thoughtful and unique gift for collectors of Japanese antique metalwork or as a housewarming gift for those drawn to mindful, contemplative home spaces.
