Japanese Tetsubin Iron Kettle | Antique Tea Kettle & Wabi-Sabi Decor Accent, 1927-1945 (Early Showa), SKU 26M-120-2

A rugged, hand-cast iron water kettle with all-over arare texturing and a bud-form lid finial -- an enduring icon of Japanese tea culture.

A tetsubin is a traditional Japanese cast-iron kettle used to boil water for the tea ceremony and everyday tea preparation. Prized by collectors of Japanese antique teaware, these kettles were cast in regional foundries -- most famously in the Nambu ironware tradition of Iwate Prefecture -- by craftsmen who pressed thousands of tiny raised dots, known as arare (hailstone) texture, into the sand mold by hand. This example displays the classic arare pattern covering the upper body and domed lid, a rounded globular form with a short upturned spout, and a fixed overhead bail handle with gracefully tapered ends. The flower-bud finial on the lid is a refined decorative touch characteristic of Early Showa-period craftsmanship. The raw, uncoated exterior has developed a rich patina of deep browns and warm rust tones that perfectly embody the wabi-sabi aesthetic so central to Japanese craft.

Beyond its historical role as a tea ceremony vessel, this handcrafted Japanese tetsubin makes a striking living room accent or Japandi-style decorative object. Displayed on a wooden shelf, sideboard, or entryway console alongside natural materials, its dense iron form and earthy patina anchor a minimalist decor scheme with quiet authority. It also works beautifully as a unique housewarming gift for collectors, Japanophiles, or anyone who appreciates the understated beauty of vintage Japanese craft. Please note: given its age and surface condition, this piece is best appreciated as a display object rather than an active kitchen kettle.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
