Japanese Hachi Serving Bowl | Vintage Decorative Bowl & Fruit Bowl, 1946-1965 (Mid Showa), SKU 26M-867-1
A boldly painted sometsuke porcelain bowl with a scalloped rim and richly layered blue-and-white floral motifs -- a striking example of mid-century Japanese tableware craft.
A hachi is a traditional Japanese serving bowl used at the center of the table to present soups, simmered dishes, or seasonal ingredients for shared dining. This generously sized example is rendered in sometsuke style -- underglaze cobalt blue on white porcelain -- a technique with deep roots in Japanese ceramic traditions from Arita and Imari kilns. The exterior is densely decorated with roundels enclosing botanical motifs, including bold peony blooms and leafy sprays set against a finely drawn diaper-pattern ground of interlocking latticework and chrysanthemum medallions. The interior repeats the scheme with a central cartouche depicting flowering plum branches in a soft, painterly wash, framed by radiating panels of additional floral imagery. The scalloped, petal-shaped rim adds an elegant sculptural quality consistent with formal Japanese antique tableware of the mid-Showa period. A square seal mark is fired in underglaze blue within a double circle on the unglazed foot -- a hallmark of studio production from this era.
Today this handcrafted Japanese porcelain bowl transitions beautifully from the dining table into the modern interior. Its deep form and striking blue-and-white palette make it an ideal living room accent piece -- displayed on a console, sideboard, or coffee table as a standalone decorative object in a Japandi style or wabi-sabi aesthetic setting. It works equally well as a fruit bowl or bread bowl on a kitchen counter, where its decorative surface can be appreciated up close. Collectors and Japanophiles will also appreciate it displayed on a plate stand as wall or shelf decor. It makes a memorable and unique gift for the home entertainer or Japanese antique collector who appreciates vintage Japanese craft with genuine provenance.
