Japanese Okidokei Mantel Clock | Vintage Shelf Clock & Living Room Accent, 1946-1965 (Mid Showa), SKU 26M-653-1

A mid-century mantel clock by Aichi Tokei Denki of Nagoya -- sleek wood-grained case, brass Roman numerals, and a mechanical chime movement that marks every hour with quiet ceremony.

An okidokei is a freestanding tabletop or mantel clock, a form that became enormously popular in Japanese homes during the postwar reconstruction era. This refined example was manufactured by Aichi Tokei Denki K.K. of Nagoya -- a storied Japanese clockmaker whose instruments graced the drawing rooms and reception halls of mid-Showa households. The elongated low-profile base sweeps gracefully to either side of a bold cylindrical drum case, a silhouette instantly recognizable as the "napoleonhut" or captain's-hat style that was fashionable across Japan and Europe in the 1950s and early 1960s. The case is finished in a richly linear wood veneer -- consistent with nara (Japanese oak) -- accented by dark lacquered banding and slim brass inlay lines that run the length of the plinth. The dial is equally refined: a convex glass crystal protects a warm cream chapter ring bearing gilt Roman numerals, while a matching pair of slender brass hands point from a central brass hub. The back panel opens to reveal a fully mechanical brass movement stamped with the maker's mark, complete with twin chime hammers for the striking train -- a testament to the handcrafted Japanese clockmaking tradition of the era.

In today's home this vintage Japanese mantel clock makes an effortlessly striking living room accent or fireplace mantel centerpiece. Its low, horizontal form and warm wood tones complement Japandi style interiors as readily as mid-century modern or wabi-sabi aesthetic arrangements. Placed on a bookshelf, sideboard, or console table it introduces an analog sense of calm that no digital device can replicate -- a meaningful housewarming gift or gift for Japanophiles who appreciate functional antique objects with genuine provenance. Whether kept in running condition as a working chime clock or displayed purely as a sculptural decorative accent, it brings a grounded, timeless quality to any room.

A graceful piece of vintage Japanese antique clockmaking -- where postwar craftsmanship, warm natural wood, and the gentle rhythm of a mechanical chime movement come together in one enduring living room accent.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
