Vintage Japanese Kabuto (Samurai Display Helmet), Late Showa era, 1966-1989 | SKU: 26M-750

A signed Ryuzan-saku display kabuto with aoi mon crest, dense sugake odoshi lacing in burnt orange, and brocade fukigaeshi -- presented on a fitted wooden stand.

A kabuto is the iconic domed helmet of the Japanese samurai, and this handcrafted display piece captures every element of that tradition in remarkable detail. Crafted during the Late Showa era by an artisan signing as Ryuzan (Ryuzan-saku, with red seal, as seen on the accompanying wooden tablet), this gogatsu ningyo -- a Boys' Day decorative armor piece displayed each year on Tango no Sekku -- was made to inspire courage and good fortune in young sons. The riveted iron hachi (helmet bowl) is finished in a deep lacquered brown, topped with a gilt kuchigane crown and fitted with a pair of tall, blackened kuwagata horn ornaments that sweep dramatically upward. At the front, a bold medallion displays the three-leaf aoi (hollyhock) crest in gold on black lacquer -- a motif associated with the great samurai traditions of Japan. The wide shikoro neck guard is laced throughout in warm burnt-orange sugake odoshi silk cord threaded through rows of gilt metal lamellae, while the large fukigaeshi ear guards are covered in fine cream-and-red brocade fabric patterned with floral medallions, each accented with a domed brass boss. Cast gilt and silver metal fittings adorn the mabizashi (peak), completing a display that reflects the skill of vintage Japanese craft at its finest.

Today, this signed kabuto display piece brings an undeniable focal point to any interior. Displayed on its original dark-stained wooden stand -- fitted with brass corner fittings and a braided decorative cord -- it functions beautifully as a living room accent or statement piece on a console, bookshelf, or entryway table. The warm orange and gold tones complement both Japandi style interiors and more eclectic collector spaces equally well. It is an exceptional unique gift for Japanophiles, samurai history enthusiasts, or anyone who appreciates rare Japanese vintage decor. The included Ryuzan-saku maker tablet adds provenance and collector appeal that few display pieces can match.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
