Japanese Fumidai Step Stool | Antique Accent Stool & Living Room Decor, 1912-1926 (Taisho), SKU 26M-593
A boldly sculptural fumidai from the Taisho era -- hand-crafted in richly stained hardwood with a striking pyramid silhouette and carved circular cut-outs.
A fumidai is a traditional Japanese step stool or mounting block, used in homes and workshops to reach elevated shelves, assist with dressing, or simply bridge the height difference between floor levels in a tatami room. This example, dating to the Taisho period (1912-1926), is a particularly expressive piece of Japanese antique furniture: its wide, tapering A-frame base rises to a compact top step, while a lower intermediate step provides a two-tier climbing surface. The sides are each pierced with a large circular cut-out -- a detail that lightens the visual mass of the form and doubles as a hand grip for easy carrying. The wood, likely a straight-grained Japanese hardwood such as nara (oak) or a similar species, carries a deep burgundy-red stain that has mellowed beautifully with age, its linear grain still vivid beneath a century of patina. Sturdy mortise-and-tenon joinery and solid panel construction speak to the careful handcrafted Japanese woodworking tradition of the era.
In a modern home this sculptural stool brings instant wabi-sabi aesthetic character to any room. Use it as a living room accent stool or side table -- the flat top step is an ideal resting spot for a small plant, a candle, or a stack of books. In a Japandi-style bedroom it works beautifully as a low nightstand or bedside perch. In an entryway it can serve as a shoe-changing bench, nodding to its original domestic role. Its compact footprint and eye-catching silhouette also make it a standout display piece on its own, and it would be a memorable housewarming gift or unique gift for collectors of vintage Japanese craft and folk furniture.
