Vintage Japanese Soroban (Abacus) by Hasegawa Shoten, Early Showa 1927-1945 | SKU: 26M-004-1
A large-format vintage soroban bearing the maker's mark of Hasegawa Shoten -- a rare find from wartime Japan.
A soroban is the traditional Japanese abacus, refined from its Chinese predecessor into a precise calculating instrument used in commerce, banking, and education across Japan for centuries. This impressive early Showa-period example features multiple columns of bicone-shaped wooden beads -- one heaven bead above the reckoning bar and several earth beads below -- threaded on brass rods set into a warm-toned hardwood frame. Red-painted place-value markers on the reckoning bar divide the columns into denomination groups, a practical detail that helped merchants and accountants work quickly and accurately. The beads slide smoothly and the brass rods retain their original finish, a testament to the quality of its original manufacture. This is a genuinely handcrafted Japanese vintage tool that speaks to the era when skilled soroban-making was a respected craft in Japan.
The reverse side of this soroban carries a boldly carved and painted maker's panel bearing the name "Kabushiki Kaisha Hasegawa Shoten" (Hasegawa Trading Company, Ltd.) beneath a red sunrise emblem -- a striking period branding detail that adds provenance and visual drama. In a modern home, this piece works beautifully as a living room accent or home office display piece, mounted horizontally on a shelf or wall bracket as a piece of functional vintage Japanese art. Its geometric grid of cream-coloured beads and warm wood tones suits a Japandi style or wabi-sabi aesthetic perfectly. It also makes a unique gift for collectors of Japanese vintage pieces, educators, or anyone who appreciates the beauty of pre-digital calculation tools.
