Vintage Japanese Kutani Porcelain Kyusu Teapot and Footed Cup Set, Early Showa (1927-1945) | SKU: 26M-603-2
A striking Kutani porcelain kyusu teapot and matching footed cup set, lavishly decorated with white chrysanthemums and gilded spirals on a deep teal ground.
A kyusu is a traditional Japanese side-handle or overhead-handle teapot used for brewing and serving green tea, and this example belongs to the celebrated Kutani ware tradition of Ishikawa Prefecture. Kutani-yaki has been produced since the Edo period and is prized worldwide for its bold, jewel-like palette and intricate overglaze enamel work. This vintage Japanese tea set is decorated in the classic "ao-Kutani" (green Kutani) manner, with white kiku (chrysanthemum) blooms packed tightly across a teal dotted ground, punctuated by swirling gold spirals and framed by geometric gold-and-black border bands. The arching overhead handle is finished in deep black with a running gold dot motif, and the spout is accented with a delicate gilded fern detail -- hallmarks of handcrafted Japanese export-quality porcelain from the early Showa era. The base of both the teapot and the footed cups bears the red Kutani mark, confirming their authenticated regional provenance.
This vintage Japanese porcelain set is as arresting on display as it is functional. The boldly patterned teapot makes a stunning living room accent or Japandi-style shelf centerpiece, while the graduated footed cups stack elegantly and can hold small trinkets, rings, or condiments as part of a curated entryway or dining table vignette. Grouped together on a lacquered tray, the full set becomes a compelling wabi-sabi aesthetic display -- a rare collector's gift for Japanophiles, tea ceremony enthusiasts, or anyone drawn to Japanese vintage ceramics with genuine art-historical character.
