Japanese Chabudai Folding Low Table | Antique Floor Dining Table & Living Room Coffee Table, 1927-1945 (Early Showa), SKU 26M-896-1
A handcrafted Japanese folding chabudai with a dramatically grained hardwood top and compact, foldable legs -- a rare and functional survivor of prewar daily life.
A chabudai is a traditional Japanese low dining table used at floor level, where family members would gather seated on cushions or tatami. During the Early Showa period, the chabudai was the centerpiece of the Japanese home, used for meals, tea, and everyday tasks. This fine example features a rectangular top surfaced in boldly figured hardwood -- the swirling, wave-like grain strongly suggests keyaki (zelkova), one of the most prized Japanese hardwoods, widely used in handcrafted Japanese antique furniture of this era. The top is finished with a warm amber-toned lacquer that deepens the natural figure of the wood beautifully. The underside reveals a well-engineered folding leg assembly: two paired leg frames hinge flat against the tabletop for compact storage, secured by wooden locking bars -- a clever design that made the chabudai easy to tuck away after meals, perfectly suited to the flexible, multi-use spaces of traditional Japanese homes.
Today, this vintage Japanese chabudai translates effortlessly into modern interiors. Use it as a living room coffee table in a Japandi-style or wabi-sabi aesthetic setting, placing it on a tatami mat or natural fiber rug for an authentic low-table experience. Its compact footprint and fold-flat legs make it equally practical as a floor desk or meditation table in a home office or reading nook. The richly grained top also makes this a striking decorative accent -- display it folded against a wall as a piece of Japanese antique furniture in its own right. A thoughtful and unique housewarming gift for collectors, Japanophiles, or anyone drawn to the quiet beauty of prewar Japanese craftsmanship.
