Japanese Chabudai Folding Table | Antique Low Coffee Table & Floor Dining Table, 1927-1945 (Early Showa), SKU 26M-889
A handcrafted Japanese antique folding chabudai with a richly grained round top and ebonized folding legs -- a rare survivor from pre-war Japan.
A chabudai is a traditional Japanese low dining table designed for floor-level living, where family members would gather seated on zabuton cushions or tatami for meals and tea. This Early Showa-period example features a generously proportioned circular top in a deeply burnished hardwood -- the bold, straight grain and rich reddish-brown tone suggest keyaki (zelkova) or a similarly dense hardwood, darkened over decades of use and handling. The underside reveals a well-constructed folding leg frame, with cross-braced rails that lock the legs firmly in place when open and collapse flat for easy storage -- a practical design refinement that became common in Japanese antique furniture of the interwar era. The legs are finished in deep black lacquer, creating a striking two-tone contrast with the warm top surface that reflects the refined domestic craft traditions of pre-war Japan.
In a modern home, this vintage Japanese chabudai works beautifully as a living room coffee table for floor seating arrangements, perfectly suited to a Japandi style or wabi-sabi aesthetic interior. Its round form and compact footprint also make it an elegant floor desk for reading or journaling, or a low display table for a meditation corner or entryway vignette. The folding legs allow it to be tucked away when not in use -- a practical bonus for smaller spaces. A meaningful housewarming gift or gift for collectors of Japanese antique furniture, this table carries nearly a century of quiet domestic history into any contemporary setting.
