Japanese Haribako Sewing Box | Vintage Jewelry Box & Desk Organizer, 1946-1965 (Mid Showa), SKU 26M-074-2
A richly grained mid-century haribako with a hinged lid compartment and multiple pull-out drawers -- handcrafted Japanese antique storage at its finest.
A haribako is a traditional Japanese sewing box used by women to keep needles, thread, thimbles, and other needlework essentials neatly organized and close at hand. This handcrafted Japanese antique example dates to the Mid Showa period (1946-1965), a time when the haribako remained an everyday household fixture in Japanese homes. The exterior is veneered in a boldly figured hardwood -- likely kaki (persimmon) -- displaying sweeping, flame-like grain patterns in deep burgundy and amber that give the piece an almost painterly quality. The top lifts open on a hinge to reveal a shallow interior compartment divided into smaller sections, ideal for the smallest notions. Beneath the lid, a series of pull-out drawers in a staggered layout -- with a mix of wider and narrower sizes -- provide generous tiered storage, each fitted with a brass bar pull that has aged to a warm, patinated tone. The rounded corners of the carcass and the clean joinery reflect the careful craftsmanship typical of vintage Japanese craft from this era.
Today this versatile haribako translates beautifully into a modern home well beyond the sewing room. Its multiple graduated drawers make it an exceptional jewelry box and vanity organizer for a bedroom decor setting -- rings, earrings, and bracelets slot naturally into the shallower upper drawers while longer pieces find a home below. On a home office desk it serves equally well as a compact desk organizer for stationery, art supplies, or small collectibles. The rich wabi-sabi aesthetic of the aged wood and patinated brass hardware pairs effortlessly with Japandi style interiors, adding warmth and authentic character to any shelf, dresser top, or side table. A thoughtful housewarming gift or a standout piece for collectors of Japanese antique furniture.
