Japanese Haribako Sewing Box | Vintage Jewelry Box & Desk Organizer, 1946-1965 (Mid Showa), SKU 26M-074-1
A handcrafted Mid Showa haribako with a hinged lid compartment, multiple pull-out drawers, and warm honey-toned wood grain -- a charming survivor of postwar Japanese domestic craft.
A haribako is a traditional Japanese sewing box used by women to store needles, thread, thimbles, and other needlework essentials. This vintage Japanese haribako dates to the Mid Showa period (1946-1965), a time when handcrafted household items remained central to daily life in Japan despite rapid postwar modernization. Constructed from a straight-grained hardwood -- likely sen (castor aralia) or a similar pale Japanese timber -- the box showcases the clean, utilitarian aesthetic typical of mid-century Japanese craft. The exterior presents a warm amber tone with a fine linear grain, finished simply without lacquer, allowing the natural character of the wood to speak for itself. Each drawer is fitted with a small cast metal bar pull, gently aged to a dark patina that contrasts beautifully with the light wood.
Today this haribako translates effortlessly into a modern home as a versatile desktop organizer or bedroom accent piece. The hinged lid opens to reveal a shallow top compartment -- ideal for rings, earrings, or cufflinks -- while the multiple pull-out drawers below, several of which include interior dividers, offer generous organized storage for jewelry, art supplies, stationery, or small collectibles. Its compact footprint and Japandi-style wabi-sabi aesthetic make it equally at home on a bedroom dresser, home office desk, or bathroom vanity shelf. A thoughtful and unique housewarming gift or gift for collectors of vintage Japanese craft, this haribako brings quiet, functional beauty to any minimalist decor setting.
