Japanese Tokkuri Sake Bottle | Antique Bud Vase & Living Room Accent, 1912-1926 (Taisho), SKU 26M-563-1

A hand-painted stoneware sake bottle bearing bold calligraphic brushwork -- a striking artifact of Taisho-era Japanese craft pottery.

A tokkuri is a traditional Japanese ceramic flask used to store and serve sake, and this example from the Taisho period is a particularly expressive specimen of Japanese antique pottery. Wheel-thrown from dense stoneware and finished with a cream-toned slip glaze, the bottle is decorated on all four sides with large, freely painted characters rendered in dark iron-oxide pigment. The brushwork is confident and gestural -- more akin to calligraphy as a fine art than simple labeling -- likely identifying the brewery or brand name of the sake it once held. The slightly squared cylindrical form, gently tapering neck, and small flat stopper cap are all characteristic of commercial tokkuri produced for regional sake breweries during the Meiji and Taisho periods, when Japanese stoneware bottles were the standard vessel for distributing nihonshu (Japanese rice wine). The unglazed recessed base, visible in the detail images, shows the raw stoneware clay body and confirms hand-finishing consistent with early twentieth-century Japanese craft production.

Today, a piece like this transcends its utilitarian origins and works beautifully as a living room accent or entryway decor object. Its tall, rounded profile and dramatic ink-black calligraphy make it a natural focal point on a shelf, sideboard, or dining table -- an ideal expression of the wabi-sabi aesthetic that celebrates age, imperfection, and quiet beauty. Place a single stem or dried branch inside to use it as a bud vase, or display it as standalone sculptural decor alongside other Japanese ceramics and natural materials. It also makes a memorable and unique gift for collectors of Japanese antiques, sake enthusiasts, or anyone drawn to Japandi-style interiors. A rare and authentic piece of handcrafted Japanese pottery that carries over a century of history in its brushstrokes.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
